Christmas Eve ride

December 24, 2008

We did an abbreviated version of our annual Christmas Eve ride to deliver our gifts throughout the neighborhood. The roads were pretty snowy and slick, so we went a little early, didn't spend as much time on the roads and went down to the field at the end of the road and pulled the sled around using Kip. It was our first ride on Beau out of the arena.

Crimson Beau Dean

Crimson Beau Dean
, "Beau" was added to the herd December 11th. We saw him advertised "free to a good home" on KSL.com and put in our application. Check out this early video. Within 36 hours he had made the move from St. George to Alpine! He is getting acclimated very fast. Check out the snow picture from Christmas Eve here.

Gamble

November 28, 2008

We thought that Gamble was going to die on Thanksgiving night. I went to feed him and he backed away from the feed and just collapsed. He stayed down for about 45 minutes, without any signs of colic or pain, but he just did not want to get up and eat. That was very unlike Gamble who is always first in line. Finally he got up and went over to eat. I watched him for another half hour and then went home thinking that he wouldn't last the night. But in the morning, there he was, anxiously waiting for his breakfast. He seems to be doing great now, even putting a little weight back on.

Evening stroll

October 29, 2008

So PJ, Gamble and Kip got out of the pasture one night this fall (Oct 29th) and went for a stroll. I didn't discover it until I went to feed them on Thursday morning and they weren't there. Luckily the police had seen them about 11:00 pm and followed them as they made their way back to the OLD PASTURE. The police put them through a gate and thought that they were fenced in. However, the old pasture doesn't have a fence around it any more, but they were content to spend the night wandering around the old barn until the morning when I was able to pick them up and haul them back. They traveled about 4 miles through the streets of Alpine.

Introduction to our horses

We have been interested in horses for quite a while, but have only been actively involved as owners/caretakers since 2002. Scott used to ride most Sunday afternoons while in high school with a couple of friends. After the end of school their junior year they went on a week long horseback trip in Huntington Canyon. Lots of 'interesting' events that will be documented elsewhere. Scott also rode while on his mission for the LDS church on the Navajo Indian reservation, 1975-77. Again, a number of exciting stories from that episode that will be recorded elsewhere, someday. Scott's brother, Ben, had a number of horses including Pay Chex, a grulla AQHA stallion. Our first horse of the "modern" era is PJ (Pay Chex's Jewell, b. 1984) a grulla Paint mare that was sired by Pay Chex and was out of Jewells, a Paint. PJ was named by Ronda. We brought PJ to Alpine in January of 2003. Gamble (b. 1982) a Quarter horse gelding, came early that summer. We added Kip (registered name Capital Gold Smoke b. 2000), a POA, in the spring of 2004 and Kori in 2007 after leasing him since 2005. Kori (registered name Koriadni Vector+ b. 1995) is an Arabian and earned his LEGION of MERIT award in 2008. We added Beau (also an Arabian with the registered name Crimson Beau Dean b. 1994) to the herd in December 2008.
